For 18 days in October, a combination of over 1,200 entries, 159 locations and tens of thousands of viewers made a three-square-mile section of metro Grand Rapids destination central for ArtPrize. The ArtPrize event became an instant hit.

ArtPrize also came with a few challenges that only success can bring. The volume of interest generated by the event brought unexpected crowds to area restaurants. It also created traffic and parking challenges as people sought a way to navigate to the many locations. Fortunately, ArtPrize planners had solutions.

ArtPrize leadership sponsor Meijer made select store locations available for art patrons who wanted to park their cars and ride The Rapid to the downtown area to avoid traffic and parking issues. For many, it was a first-time opportunity riding The Rapid, but allowed them to avoid parking challenges.

Those who purchased Experience Packages received wristbands giving them the ability to ride The Rapid for free and catch ArtPrize shuttles to five neighborhoods. ArtPrize employed its own fleet of shuttles to travel in a one-way loop with stops in each neighborhood that allowed visitors to hop on or off at any stop along the way. Over 6,000 rides were provided on regular Rapid routes to wristband wearers.
