Service Enhancements Coming Monday, August 27

Thanks to the passage of the May 2011 Public Transportation Millage, more service enhancements will be implemented on Monday, August 27, 2012.

As a result of the successful public transportation millage in May 2011, The Rapid will be implementing a second round of 2012 service enhancements on Monday, August 27. There will be twice as many corridors with 15 minute service during rush hour, all routes will run at least every half-hour during the day on weekdays, and Route 50 (GVSU Campus Connector) will conect directly to Rapid Central Station.

Here are the details:

  • Six routes currently have 15 minute peak service.  We will double this by adding 15-minute peak service to the next six most productive routes/corridors.
    • Routes 5 (Wealthy/Woodland) from Central Station to Breton Village Mall (Breton and Burton), 7 (West Leonard), 8 (Grandville/Rivertown Crossing) Central Station to 28th Street, 15 (East Leonard), and 28 (28th Street) between Woodland Mall and Burlingame will go from 30-minute to 15-minute peak service frequency.  If the service improvement doesn’t extend along the entire route as noted above, 30-minute service will remain in effect for the other portions of the route.
    • 15-minute service along the Michigan corridor, currently served by Route 13, will be accomplished via a new route, Route 19, that will mimic Route 13 between Rapid Central Station and the intersection of Michigan and Fuller.  Route 13 will continue to operate north of Michigan as it currently does.  Route 19 will serve Fuller to the south until it reaches Hall Street.  Both Routes 13 and 19 will have 30-minute peak frequency from the intersection of Michigan and Fuller through the end of the routes.
  • All routes will operate on a base frequency of 30 minutes from 5:00 a.m. – 7:15 p.m.
    • Route 17 (Woodland/Airport) and Route 44 (44th Street) will see improvement from 60-minute service to 30-minutes.  With this improvement, all routes will run on 30 minute service during this time frame.
  • Route 50 (GVSU Campus Connector) will have the extension to Rapid Central Station added from 6:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., meaning that Route 50 will serve Rapid Central Station Monday – Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 12:30 a.m during the Fall and Spring semesters.  Frequencies will match the published Route 50 schedule.
