New York artist Dennis Oppenheim talks about his piece, "Journey Home," in front of The Rapid Central bus station Friday before the sculpture's dedication ceremony.

Oppenheim, who also visited Grand Rapids in 2006 to pitch his vision, has said he was thinking about passengers going home when he designed the circular piece that begins from a smaller point and gets larger as it curves toward the shape of a house. "As you near a destination, it becomes larger and larger and appears to loom," he said of the concept.

The sculpture was part of a larger art project funded with $300,000 in federal and state grants and about $170,000 from the Downtown Development Authority. It cost $200,000 to commission the sculpture and about $50,000 to prepare the site.
