The Rapid

Where Will It Go?

After an intensive study process over several years, it was determined that Silver Line should be located in the Division Avenue corridor. The corridor is over 9 miles long and serves an area with the highest commuter volume in the region. Located strategically near US 131, it provides a needed alternative to commuters to access the large concentration of jobs in the downtown. The corridor links hospitals in and around downtown, research facilities on "Medical Mile," five college campuses, as well as downtown venues such as DeVos Place and VanAndel Arena.

The existing Division Avenue route #1 is the busiest non-university route in The Rapid’s fixed route system. The main alignment proceeds from Central Station, the downtown hub of The Rapid, to Division Avenue, then Division Avenue south to 68th Street. Route #1 circulates in the vicinity of 68th Street, and 54th Street, returning to Division Avenue in order to head northbound to downtown Grand Rapids.

The Silver Line will intercept three existing cross-town routes and one other route, which funnels into Division Avenue. With transfers to the Silver Line, the average wait time in peak hours would be five minutes. ITS (intelligent transportation system) signage will display “next bus” status - including the estimated wait time for transfers in either direction.
