What’s next for the Silverline?
Part of our Phase I plan also includes the completion of the Silverline Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service along Division serving downtown Grand Rapids, the Medical Mile, Grand Rapids Community College, and a host of businesses along the Division corridor.
Stations along the corridor will provide maps and scheduling information, electronic signs displaying vehicle arrivals and departures, security cameras, and a way to pay fares. BRT hybrid diesel-electric vehicles reduce fuel costs and emissions by about 30%.
Thanks to the passage of the May 2011 Public Transportation Millage, the SilverLine Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project continues to move forward. The successful millage guarantees that local funds will be availabe to operate the system, so The Rapid continues to work through the funding and approval process with the Federal Transportation Administration.
In November of 2011, the U.S. Congress passed the Fiscal Year 2012 Trasnportation Appropriations bill with $12,887,943 appropriated for the SilverLine project. This funding will be awarded if the FTA approves The Rapid's Project Construction Grant Agreement (PCGA), which is expected this spring. Once the PCGA is approved, construction can begin.
