Bus Operator

Status: Full-time
Starting salary: $15.71 per hour

Job description

Summary:

The full-time bus operator is a safety-sensitive position that operates all vehicles in a safe, efficient, dependable and courteous manner, as directed by the work assignment. Bus Operators will be able to read, interpret and follow run guides for assigned routes, and be knowledgeable of all equipment usage. All Operators will collect passenger ridership and farebox revenue data as prescribed by ITP procedures. All Operators will board and discharge the general public, elderly and mobility handicapped passengers with concern and consideration consistent with ITP policies and procedures. Operators will perform other bus driving duties as required by the Transportation Supervisor in charge and not inconsistent with the contractual agreement. All Operators will maintain consistent and effective Operator-Management relationship.

This position description is not necessarily all inclusive of the work detail performed as part of the job.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  1. Must perform duties as directed by work assignment.
  2. Must understand and speak English to communicate with passengers/customers. Must be able to read, interpret and follow run guide for assigned route; leaving route only as directed by Transportation Manager, or Transportation Supervisors, and must maintain required schedule.
  3. Must have knowledge of traffic codes, rules, regulations, and operate vehicles in a safe manner in full compliance with local and State traffic laws and ordinances.
  4. Have working knowledge of equipment used and give proper care and consideration for the same.
  5. Must be knowledgeable of the service area, transfer points, and respond to passenger requests for information.
  6. Perform pre- and post-operation vehicle inspection, and must record any physical deficiencies on required form, making sure signature is included.
  7. Must be responsible for and capable of operating lift and/or ramp equipped vehicles.
  8. Board and discharge passengers in safe and efficient manner; must have concern and consideration of the handling of the elderly and mobility handicapped.
  9. Be courteous, considerate and dependable while in service.
  10. Must meet all physical standards prescribed by policies and procedures.
  11. Must keep current commercial drivers license with proper endorsements.
  12. Operate communications equipment according to prescribed FCC rules and regulations.
  13. Collect passenger ridership and farebox revenue data as prescribed by ITP procedures.
  14. Wear and maintain prescribed ITP Operator uniforms, and maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance at all time.
  15. Must be punctual and report for duty in the prescribed manner.
  16. Responsible to record "IN" or "OUT" on Daily Trip Report prior to or following completion of daily work assignment. Must be punctual and report for duty in prescribed manner.
  17. Maintain consistent and effective Operator-Management working relationship.
  18. Participate in training and safety programs as directed and meet ITP standards and procedures.
  19. Report all incidents or accidents and complete required forms for same following prescribed ITP procedures.
  20. Provide all completed documents, reports and statistics.
  21. Know and perform all job duties within the description of ITP operating safety and pre-planned emergency procedures, policies and contractual agreements.
  22. Perform other bus driving duties assigned by Transportation Manager, or Transportation Supervisors.

Examples of work (illustrative only):

  • Checks lights, brakes, steering, and tires prior to leaving garage.
  • Drives city bus on a number of assigned or special routes, picking up and discharging passengers at designated locations according to schedule.
  • Collects fares, transfers or tickets from each passenger and issues transfers.
  • Report needed repairs and maintenance work for vehicles to Maintenance Department.
  • Makes required reports on passengers transported daily and any unusual happenings.
  • Reports all accidents involving bus or passengers immediately to the Transportation Supervisor on duty.
  • Keeps bus clean and in orderly condition.
  • Complies with all laws and regulations concerning the operation of the vehicle, including safety and precautions and posted speed limits.

Qualifications:

Some experience in driving a bus or equivalent and completion of the twelfth school grade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Specification Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Michigan license preferably with no more then two (2) points. More then four (4) points will disqualify an applicant from being considered. Must be able to obtain the proper Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with endorsements prior to ending of the training period.
  • Must meet standards required by ITP, including no addiction to alcohol or drugs.
  • Must pass Department of Transportation physical examination, drug test, and must be able to perform job safely without direct threat of health or safety to self or others.
  • Must be physically capable of operating lift or ramp-equipped vehicles.
  • Must maintain an excellent driving record.

Minimum acceptable job performance standards:

  • Maintain continuous professional attitude, appearance and conduct at all times.
  • Maintain continuous awareness and concern for the safety and well being of every passenger.
  • Maintain constant care in the use of all ITP equipment and report all defects as they are found.
  • Maintain sound judgment in determining and reporting all pull-offs, incidents, or accidents and equipment defects.
  • Maintain strict adherence to required radio courtesy and procedures.
  • Maintain consistent observance and compliance with all ITP rules and regulations, and contractual requirements.

Education and/or experience:

Completion of the twelfth school grade; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Must understand and speak English to communicate with passengers/customers. Prefer some knowledge of the principles of bus operations; some knowledge of the street and road system of the City and State; good knowledge of City and State regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of buses; good knowledge of driving courtesy and safety; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain good public relations; integrity; good physical condition and good vision.

Sufficient practical or academic education or training to warrant presumption of successful handling of duties assigned; preferably experience in operating commercial passenger automotive equipment; reasonable knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment; considerable knowledge of traffic rules and regulations; ability to follow oral and written direction; some mechanical aptitude; mentally alert; physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the position.

Physical demands:

Posture: Primarily sitting, except when checking bus over and standing to change signs, etc. Requires normal cervical mobility, trunk mobility, shoulder motion to 150, normal elbow/wrist/ hand mobility. Repeated trunk positioning is required to adjust the driver�s seat to proper position (using pneumatic controls).
Force Required: Turning wheel requires up to 50 pounds of rotatory force, 17 pounds to adjust mirrors, lifting back tailgate requires up to 50 pounds.
Repetitions: Eighty-eight (88) turns of the wheel on short routes, and up to 205 turns of wheel on long routes. Mirror adjusting normally occurs daily. Lifting the tailgate occurs only if the bus breaks down.
