Job Description — Technician III
Summary:
The Technician III is a safety-sensitive introductory position. All employees in this classification shall be introduced and instructed in various aspects of automotive/transit bus maintenance procedures. Training and instructions shall be administered through supervision and/or the employee will be assigned and supervised by an employee of a higher classification. As the individual progresses or can demonstrate their ability to perform job functions, they will be assigned and allowed to work on their own under general supervision.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Employees will work under supervision in automotive transit maintenance by learning and performing progressively more difficult and varied bench, shop, garage, and fieldwork in dismantling, assembling, installing, maintaining and repairing all units, and to perform related work as required. Such work shall include, through a combination of training and direct experience, at a minimum, the areas of:
- Electrical
- Engine
- Transmission
- Brakes
- Steering
- Suspension and Axle
- Body
- Drive Train
- Automotive Equipment
- Vehicle Inspections and Appropriate Repairs
- Welding and Torch Work
- Heating and Air conditioning Systems
- Wheels and Tires
- Repair of shop equipment and related machinist work
As directions are given to general and specific work assignments, the employee will be required to work and perform in accordance with established methods for inspections and repairs. Employee will view work, which is in process and, when completed, be given the opportunity to apply acquired skills and knowledge. As work experience increases, employee will be given increased responsibility to perform a variety of tasks such as: inspection and repair of bus and sub systems, maintenance of engines, transmissions, differentials, and other parts of transit equipment. Employee will individually perform progressively more difficult tasks in repair and maintenance of equipment, ranging from the less difficult operations (such as inspecting, dismantling, repairing, adjusting, replacing, assembling and maintaining drive shafts, universal joints, air bellows, shock absorbers, radius rods, brake shoes, drums and hubs, brakes, accelerator pedal assemblies and related parts, front and rear axles and other chassis parts, inspection of automotive equipment and accessories); and, as skills increase, performing the more difficult tasks necessary to make the adjustments, alignments or repairs necessary to produce smooth and efficient operation of the vehicle and all of its component units.
As skills are developed, after having received instructions, may perform any technical tasks associated with transit repair, such as minor fabricating, drilling, bolting, welding, brazing or soldering or cutting. May also inspect bodies and replace body units, fixtures and accessories. Employees are required to clean and clear their own work area.
Qualifications:
- Must provide own hand tools necessary to perform the work assigned.
- Must pass Department of Transportation physical examination and drug test.
- Must possess valid Michigan license and obtain proper Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with endorsements.
- Must meet standards required by ITP, including training and testing for 608 and 609 A/C certifications.
- Willingness to perform any assigned task, including performing tasks of increasing difficulty, variety and complexity.
Minimum acceptable job performance standards:

- Maintain continuous awareness and concern for on-the-job safety.
- Know and perform all job duties within description of ITP operating safety and pre-planned emergency procedures, policies and contractual agreements.
- Maintain constant care in the use of all ITP equipment and report all defects as they are found.
- Maintain consistent observance and compliance with all ITP rules and regulations, and contractual requirements.
- Maintain consistent and effective Maintenance-Management working relationship.
- Participate in training and safety programs as directed and meet ITP standards and procedures.
Education and/or experience:
Knowledge and experience in repairing automotive equipment and be reasonably familiar with engine and chassis units and general auto repair equipment. Good technical aptitude and powers of observation and initiative and resourcefulness in handling repair problems.
Completion of high school with courses in general shop and automotive repair or equivalent.
Physical demands:
Posture: Prolonged standing, short walking, various trunk positions have to be maintained for prolonged periods when repairing buses; sitting only during bus inspections and on breaks; requires normal trunk mobility, bending of knees, normal cervical mobility, full shoulder mobility, normal elbow/wrist/hand mobility.
Force Required: Lumbar lifting (floor to waist) up to 85 pounds; cervical lifting (waist to overhead) up to 77 pounds; pushing/pulling isometrically up to 62 pounds; dynamically 32 pounds; carrying up to 62 pounds.
Repetitions: Aforementioned tasks are occurring throughout the workday in repair of buses.
